PRESENTATION AT NCA ANNUAL CONVENTION

Melba Veléz Ortiz presented at the National Communication Association’s annual convention.

A Credo for Ethical Small Group Communication: An Ethnographic Case Study of a Long-term Virtual Department, Melba Veléz Ortiz

This panel presentation enacts NCA’s theme of “Our Legacy, Our Relevance” by first looking inward to ask ourselves as a discipline if we are adequately addressing the ethical dimensions of small group communication. It then asks us to look “outward” by providing a substantive tool, a Credo for Ethical Small Group Communication, to help facilitate discussions within virtual or face-to-face small groups across academia and professional contexts. This panel will be a combination of presentation and interaction:

Presentation: Each panel member will present their area of expertise in group communication ethics to provide a foundation that describes the need for a credo for ethical group communication. The panel members will also describe the results of an ethnographic study that examined a highly functioning virtual group. The results include a preliminary draft of a Credo for Ethical Small Group Communication.

Interaction: Based on the process used to build the NCA Credo for Ethical Communication, panelists and attendees will work together to further develop the Credo for Ethical Small Group Communication. The goal is to gain multiple perspectives and insights in the development of ethical group communication for both virtual and face-to-face teams.

Relationship, Responsibility and Rhetoric: Exploring Intersections of Communication Ethics and Disability, Melba Veléz Ortiz

This panel presentation will explore the intersection between communication ethics and disability, examining the relational impact of visible and invisible disabilities, questions of ethical responsibility, and negative rhetorical framings of disability in our everyday life. Panelists will share lived experiences of disabilities they possess or experiences as partners and caregivers, and the impact of disabilities on their relationships. Panel presents ideas on how communication ethics can and ought to consider issues of physical, invisible, and communicative disabilities. Levinas, Hyde, Buber, Nussbaum and others form the basis for ethical touchstones throughout the discussion.
