On March 26, members of The Lanthorn staff traveled to Austin, TX for the 2014 College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers (CNBAM) conference. CNBAM is a national organization for staff and students involved in college newspapers whether they’re graphic designers, advertising sales, marketing and promotions, or managers. Each day featured specific sessions where speakers and company representatives presented to the attendees. Companies like Google, McClatchy and Republic Media joined the conference.

Junior Advertising and Public Relations major, Joan Giffels, serves as the Advertising Account Executive at The Lanthorn. Giffels traveled with the student-run newspaper to Austin for the conference. Here she lead a discussion called “Professionalism in Client Interactions.” She was able to share candid advice from other students and professionals in the same business.

“Advertising is the only way the paper makes money to pay it’s workers, travel to conventions, and cover other expenses,” Giffels said. “Once an advertising campaign is up and running for my clients, I am constantly in touch with them and tweaking anything they ask me to. It’s a high-stress, cool job that let’s me work closely with clients. Which I think is a priceless skill for me to have long-term.”
